Advice
Basic initial advice to help you understand the issue and consider your next steps.
Government decisions can affect your income, disability supports, veterans' benefits and access to services. A decision letter, debt notice or difficulty dealing with an agency can raise legal questions. Southport Community Legal Service offers basic introductory assistance with Centrelink, the NDIS, the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) and government complaints.
Asking for an explanation, challenging a decision and complaining about service are different processes. We can help you identify the issue and the appropriate next step. Review rights and deadlines depend on the decision, so contact us promptly when you receive a letter you do not understand or disagree with.
You can ask Services Australia to explain a decision and may be able to request a formal review. We can discuss what the decision means, the reason given and your options for responding. A complaint about the way an enquiry was handled is different from a review of the payment or debt decision itself.
We can help you understand the decision, identify the appropriate process and consider legal or advocacy support.
We can offer initial assistance with DVA benefits and government service issues, including understanding a decision and finding the correct review or complaint pathway. The process depends on the type of decision. For example, income support reviews and reviews of compensation decisions do not necessarily go to the same body. Specialist veterans' advocacy or legal assistance may be appropriate.
We can help you consider both processes where relevant.
We assess each matter individually, taking account of its suitability and our available resources. An enquiry or appointment does not guarantee ongoing assistance or representation.

A specific legal task or ongoing casework may be available, decided case by case and subject to resources.
We do not make government eligibility or funding decisions, manage NDIS plans or guarantee that a payment, debt, benefit or complaint outcome will change. Specialist DVA or NDIS representation and tribunal appearances are assessed individually and may require referral.
