Advice
Basic initial advice to help you understand the issue and consider your next steps.
Civil law deals with disagreements about legal rights and responsibilities between people or organisations. Everyday issues can include a disputed personal debt, an agreement, damage to a car or an insurance claim. Southport Community Legal Service offers initial assistance to help you understand the problem and possible next steps.
Disputes can often be resolved through negotiation, a complaint process or mediation. The options depend on what happened, the evidence and any time limits. Get advice promptly if you receive court documents or a demand for payment.
A car accident can leave you dealing with repair bills, an insurer or a demand from another driver. We can discuss the vehicle damage side of the dispute. Claims for physical or psychological injury need separate advice and are outside our service.
You can seek advice about who may be responsible, what repair costs are supported and how to respond to a demand. Being uninsured does not by itself decide who caused the accident. We can discuss a possible claim, a response or payment negotiations, and whether specialist help is needed.
A court claim involves costs, risks and practical questions about recovering money. Get advice before agreeing to pay, accepting a settlement or deciding to take court action. Tell us promptly if a court response date is approaching.
We assess each matter individually, taking account of its suitability and our available resources. An enquiry or appointment does not guarantee ongoing assistance or representation.

A specific legal task or ongoing casework may be available, decided case by case and subject to resources.
Motor vehicle property damage is a separate area in which we can offer initial assistance. We cannot promise an insurance payout, recovery of money or court representation. Any further work must be agreed after we assess the matter and our resources.
