Advice
Basic initial advice to help you understand the issue and consider your next steps.
Family law covers issues when relationships change or end, including separation, divorce, parenting arrangements and child support. It applies to married and de facto couples. A divorce ends a marriage; it does not itself settle arrangements for children or divide assets.
A de facto relationship can exist when two people who are not married to each other live together as a couple on a genuine domestic basis. Parenting disputes can arise after either a marriage or a de facto relationship ends.
Family violence can include physical harm, threats, financial abuse and controlling behaviour. A family violence intervention order can protect a person from a family member, including a current or former partner. Tell us about safety concerns when seeking advice. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 000.
Read our dedicated Family violence practice page for information about safety, intervention orders and support.
We assess each matter individually, taking account of its suitability and our available resources. An enquiry or appointment does not guarantee ongoing assistance or representation.
